Quitman 2030
Answering the Questions about Quitman
Mayor Jerry Edwards recently discussed the
need for planning and establishing the
direction of Quitman. “We are facing some
important and serious questions about how
Quitman will develop over the coming years,”
Edwards said, noting recent economic decline
as seen in closing businesses, empty
commercial buildings, and reduced retail
sales. Sales tax, which is a primary
measure of a commercial economy, is down
nearly 7% compared to the previous 12
months.
What will Quitman, Texas become over the
next 20 years? Answering this and other
related questions is what the Quitman 2030
effort is all about. Starting with a
Community Conference on November 5th
at 7 PM in the Civic Center, the Quitman
2030 plan will be formed over the next few
months with community participation in
various working groups. Using a
"grassroots" effort with the citizens
deciding what is needed and how to
accomplish that vision will provide everyone
in the community an opportunity to get
involved in Quitman's future.
Mayor Edwards noted other broad areas of
concern including how to maintain
deteriorating infrastructure like roads and
utility pipes, park and open space
development, the condition and availability
of housing, and being prepared for
development. |
“All
of this works together. We have to answer these
questions about the kind of community we want and begin
to move that direction. It is about establishing and
maintaining a certain quality of life. This takes
development on all fronts.” Edwards said. Examples of
issues to be addressed included developing educational
and training opportunities, identifying businesses and
industries to develop or attract, improving and
establishing community facilities, and finding unique
draws to the community for tourism. Edwards said, “This
is about our future. It is about jobs. We are taking
the future of our community in our hands, not just
letting it happen.”
Edwards explained the purpose of the Quitman 2030 effort
is to plug people into the process of planning the
future of community. “Everybody who wants to see
Quitman move in a positive direction ought to be
involved with this in some way. There is something for
everyone. Come on November 5th. There is
some part of this that you will be interested in being
involved with.” Edwards said. The process will address
all areas of community development based on the input
and effort of those who choose to take part in the
process.
He
also noted his commitment to the effort, which is
expected to take place over the next few months into
next year, saying “Together, we are going to find a way,
or make one, to become the community we want to be.”
