Quitman 2030 - Planning the Future of Our Community
|

|
We need YOUR help.
Quitman
lacks a clear direction to improve our community, manage
the cost of services, and stimulate economic growth.
Bringing together the expertise of our citizens,
businesses, and organizations to plan our future through
various workgroups will set us on a clear path of what
we want Quitman to look like in the year 2030.
As a
concerned citizen, you can help manage, direct, and
coordinate this direction by working with the Community
Involvement Committee. Your ideas and plans will assist
us in moving the work toward completion.

NO PLAN MEANS NO CLEAR WAY
Imagine taking a trip. You get in the
car and just start driving. You don't
have a map, or directions, or even know
exactly where you are going. Every now
and then somebody just shouts 'turn now'
or 'go this way'. Then you realize
you don't have a way at all--you are
really just making it up as you go
along. Eventually you run out of gas,
stranded, without any money and nobody
knows where you are to come and help
you.
|
|
You wouldn't take a simple family trip
without an idea of where you wanted to
go and a plan of how to get there.
Certainly the future of our community
deserves the same attention and forward
thinking to provide a basis for the
decisions and direction of our future. |
|
MOVING FORWARD - NOT TURNING AROUND
Some planning has already taken place over
the past few years. This included some
evaluation of issues facing our community,
goals & objectives to be aimed for, and some
solutions & direction. The summary of
this effort, which was a 'brochure plan',
will form the basis of a more extensive and
comprehensive plan.
|
 |
|
Before the recent 'brochure plan', no plan
had been undertaken and completed for our
community since 1975. Usually, a complete
comprehensive plan would cover a 20 year
period and be reviewed / revised every five
years. An effort is now underway to answer
the question "What do we want Quitman to be
in the year 2030 and how do we get there?"
You have part of the answer to this
question. |
|
PLANNING THE WORK
Not only is planning necessary for good
development, it is required by state law.
The Quitman:2030 City Plan will meet these
requirements, but more importantly it will
provide a roadmap for the work of developing
our community over the coming years. Also,
it will provide a unified vision of who we
are and what we believe Quitman should
become.
|
 |
|
It will address critical areas such as:
transportation, city services, land use, and
economic growth. The plan will answer the
most essential questions we are dealing with
in shaping the future of our community. |
|
 |
WORKING THE PLAN
Certain local regulations must be based on a
Comprehensive Plan and revisions of these
will come out of this process to make sure
the plan is implemented.
These include the city zoning regulations
that determine how land in various places
within the city can be used and will be
developed. Current zoning regulations are
from 1975 and cannot be revised until a new
plan is completed.
|
|
Similarly, subdivision regulations control
how new residential development will take
place and to insure certain infrastructure
like roads, drainage, and utilities are
properly installed. Again these are
currently from 1975 and rely on a plan to be
effective. |
What's missing is you!
No community
plan can happen without involvement from the people
of the
community. You can be a vital part of the process of
planning for
the next 20
years in our community.
